Formaldehyde in Children’s Clothing?

with 5 comments

By Carey Van Wagoner

We have this new line of pants, Called Japanese Monkey Pants. I found them in LA last time I was there, and bought them for the store, mostly because I thought they were so cute.  They are super soft, have great prints, have an adorable smiley face on the bum, and YES are for BOYS!!!!

(They do have girls too, I just have not gotten any yet.)

Anyhow, these pants are made in Japan, by 100% Formaldehyde Free Fabric.   WHAT?

Formaldehyde in Fabric? YES you read this correctly.

Apparently a very recent study found that certain clothing manufactured in China contained more then 900 times the amount of formaldehyde considered safe by the World Health Organization!

You might wonder why textiles and clothing would be treated with formaldehyde in the first place, as I did. Most commonly the reasons are for stain resistance, permanent pressing color and dye fixation, flame resistance, or to prevent shrinkage. It is also used to prevent mildew growth in clothing that must be shipped overseas, on a boat for weeks.

The harmful effects of formaldehyde begin with nose, eye, and skin irritations (itchyness, burning, and tearing, and sore throat.)  Long term exposure can lead to more serious respiratory problems including asthma, and lower respiratory inflamation (wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing).

What is more interesting and disturbing to know is that the USA has no regulations or safety standards in regards to formaldehyde used in children’s clothing.  Japan on the other hand was the first country to implement strict guidelines and regulations, requiring no detectable traces of formaldehyde in children’s clothing, ages birth to 3 years.

Now I am not for more regulations and guidelines, but this just seems like a no brainer! A babies skin is so super sensitive, I would think formaldehyde on fabric just might be an irritant!

This is just one more reason to buy organic, buy higher quality, and do your research. I will continue on my quest to bring you products that are safe for your child.

Buy Quality, Live Better

without comments

By Carey Van Wagoner

mommy

If you don’t know me, I’m the buyer around here.  I’m not going to lie…I love to shop. I love finding things that are beautiful, that make my heart beat fast…like a handbag with amazing color, or that perfect pair of pants. You know the ones, that fit like a glove and look absolutely perfect…with everything.   I also love to shop for my kids and for you. I love to shop for you.  It is what I do. I am constantly looking for things that I love, but that you will love too. And here’s the thing…things are a-changin.  Yesterday it might have been about buying as much as you could, at the littlest price.  Today, I feel that quality is better then quantity. If you buy quality, you will spend less money. period.  The goods will last  longer, look better, wash better, wear better, be more comfortable, and make your life better. I know that is a lot to claim, but it is the truth.

Quality is the new cool. (especially at a good price.)

Don’t get me wrong…I love Target, Walmart, Forever 21, H and M, …they all have their place.

But, ….my Ugg boots that I paid  $200 for in 2008  are well into season #2 here in the good ol’ state of Utah, and they look Brand new. I mean perfect. The leather, the rubber soles, the interior…all perfect.   I will be wearing these things for 10 years. (well maybe not that long.)

Buy quality, and live better.

P.S. Stay tuned for another post on how to buy quality for kids and make your bucks stretch.
